The name tamarind comes from “tamr-i turkey”, which means “Indian date” in Arabic. Its trees are 10-25 meters tall, 7-20 cm long, 2.5-3.5 cm wide, and yield dark chestnut coloured fruits resembling carob fruits. Sugar, pectin, vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, C, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, selenium, copper, etc. It is famous in history for Turkish market quenching thirst, curing vomiting, fever and boredom. Its fruits, leaves, seeds are used in traditional medicine.
